The Course:

You will run in Valnerina, start in Terni, San Valentine's church and arrive in Marmore Falls after 6km, Arrone, Montefranco, Ferentillo and return.

The creation of the Falls dates back to 271 AD and is an incredible work of Roman engineering, designed to favour the out flow of the Velino waters, responsible for frequent and disastrous flooding and transformation of extensive areas of land into unhealthy swamps.

The main cavities of speleological interest  as well as the beauty and evocative power of the environment, are enclosed in three distinct complexes: the first includes the Grotta della Morta (cave of death) and the Grotta delle Diaclasi, and spreads over 287m with a maximum depth of 23m.; the second is the Grotta delle Colonne (cave of Columns), developed in two main parts, that afterwards collapsed forming two non communicating environments; finally with a spread of over 190m., the Grotta della Condotta, partly collapsed with an old water pipe passing through it. The Lake of Pilato

The lake of Pilato is situated at 1941 meters above sea level, in a valley shaped by ice, in the Mt. Vettore. Placed in a north-sud direction, it has changing shape and size, depending on the volume of water coming from rainfall and thaw.

When there is plenty of water, the lake is glasses shaped, with a bottleneck created by detritus. With the decrease of the water, the detritus emerge, and the lake is divided into two circular ponds, having a largest diameter of more than 300 meters and a smallest of almost 100 meters. The maximum depth is 9 meters.

The whole area of the Lake of Pilato has a immeasurable value, many are the varieties of vegetation growing at high altitudes, especially in the scree slopes. In the basin of the lake you can admire the Alpine Camedrio, the snow Gentian, the Edelweiss of the Apennines, the Silene Alpina, the Salice Herbaceous, the Yellow Poppy of the Apennines. It is not difficult to meet birds as the Alpine Chaffinch and the Kestrel in the area.

However, it is up to the waters of the lake to preserve the most important of its treasures, the endemic crustacean, the Chirocephalus Marchesonii. lavalnerina.it

Abeto, in the municipality of Preci, stands on the side of a hill, at 970 meters a.s.l., in the place, where a castle, with a triangular plant, was built between the tenth and the eleventh century. It is the oldest nucleus of the town. Its name most probably derives from white fir trees existing in these area in ancient times.

Until the half of the thirteenth century, it was ruled by the Abbey of Saint Eutizio. It was seriously damaged by the earthquake of 1328 and completely destroyed by that of 1703. Compared to the other neighboring villages, it is characterized by the presence of several neoclassical building, which make it unique. lavalnerina.it
